Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for a cement distribution center
We were appointed by LafargeHolcim to prepare the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study of one of the company’s cement distribution centers in Greece.
During this assignment we review the Greek environmental legislation and we visited the plant to identify the main polluting activities of the plant and the characteristics of the baseline environment. As soon as all these data were made available the main environmental impacts to the natural and human environment were identified and evaluated and a series of mitigation measures were determined. Finally, an Environmental Management System (EMS) according to the plant’s needs was developed, as part of the EIA study.
Groundwater monitoring in a chemical industry
The aim of this assignment was the annual groundwater monitoring in a chemical industry during the period 2016-2018. This plant is adjacent to a contaminated industrial site where contaminants such as chlorinated solvents and petroleum hydrocarbons were released by accident a few years ago. Since then groundwater sampling is carried out to monitor natural attenuation processes using dedicated groundwater monitoring wells. This assignment comprises two sampling campaigns, during which we were appointed as environmental monitoring experts.
A tailored made groundwater sampling protocol was determined according to the clients’ needs as well as a health and safety plan. Groundwater sampling were carried out by the low-flow sampling method (ASTM) and dedicated pre-preserved containers were used for each contaminant group. The samples were packed in coolers and shipped overnight to the laboratory. As soon as the analyses data were available, the conceptual site model was developed.
IED baseline report for an industrial plant
The IED Baseline Report (Directive 2010/75/EU) is part of the environmental permitting procedure of a series of industrial plants. We were appointed by a consulting company as contaminated site experts to prepare the IED baseline report for a metal processing industrial plant.
During this assignment a tailor-made methodology for the stages 1-3 of the IED baseline report was developed and approved by the client. All the appropriate information was acquired by audits, interviews with employees and available files. Soil and groundwater sampling were a significant part of this assignment. Groundwater sampling were carried out by several sampling methods and the low-flow sampling method (ASTM) was finally selected as the most appropriate. The conceptual site model was finally determined mainly focusing on the presence of heavy metals in the area.
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of a dairy plant in Western Greece
The aim of this assignment was the preparation of the EIA study for the expansion of a dairy plant in Western Greece. The dairy industry is among the most polluting industries as it produces large volume of wastewater that may adversely affect the environment, if discharged untreated. Dairy wastewater is characterised by high COD, BOD and nutrient levels. A significant part of this study was the determination of the appropriate wastewater disposal method based on the local environmental conditions and the client's needs. Wastewater treatment plant was designed by Ecotech (www.ecotech.gr).
During this assignment we review the Greek environmental legislation and we visited the plant to identify the main polluting activities and the local environmental conditions. As soon as all these data were made available the main environmental impacts to the natural and human environment were identified and evaluated and a series of mitigation measures were determined. Finally, an Environmental Management System (EMS) according to the plant’s needs was developed, as part of the EIA study.
